Sr Alacoque Gittins Academic Scholarship

Mother Alacoque (Mary Jane Veronica) Gittins was a Mother General of the Perth Presentation congregation for many years. Professed on 3 January 1906, Mother Alacoque was an enthusiastic educationalist, blessed with a keen sense of humour and great kindness. She was known to inspire the people she came in contact with. Mother Alacoque was a woman of foresight. She recognised the need to keep up with the various advances in education and saw the value in staff gaining higher degrees. She also initiated the procedure to see Iona registered with the Education Department and the University of Western Australia. These registrations were only bestowed upon the best schools in Perth. Iona was granted registration in 1949 and 1954 respectively. Mother Alacoque guided and inspired the first Old Ionian's Association in 1938 and was a respected figure within the community. She passed away on 6 January 1953.


A minimum of two academic scholarships will be awarded to incoming Year 7 students.

Scholarship recipients must meet the following criteria:

  • have an outstanding academic record and provide copy of reports to validate performance
  • be willing to actively contribute to College life through its academic, pastoral, spiritual and creative arts programs
  • contribute to the co-curricular program in the College, whilst holding the scholarship; Ability to adhere and uphold the ethos of the College
  • be able to attend the Iona Presentation College Scholarship Examination
  • maintain academic performance and record whilst holding the scholarship.

The scholarships can be either Full or Half Scholarships. Full Scholarships offer a remission of 50% of the College tuition fees, whilst Half Scholarships offer a 25% remission of College tuition fees. The incoming Year 7 recipient's scholarship is tenable for six years.

The selection process will consist of completion of the online application (www.iona.wa.edu.au/enrolments/ scholarships), payment of $100.00 application fee and attendance at the Iona Presentation College Scholarship Examination. Based on the results from the exam, selected candidates will be invited to attend an interview to assist in final selection.

The scholarship is subject to an annual review and monitoring throughout the year. The scholarship can be withdrawn if requirements are not met.
